Scandinavian design coffee table designed by Illum Wikkelsø, a Danish architect and designer, CF Christiansen Silkeborg, Denmark, in the 1960s. The coffee table is made or fine, light belassenem mahogany wood and impresses with its organic and curved From the beautifully crafted details and the high quality workmanship. The X-shaped frame on all sides visible through the heavy, floating glass plate and gives this coffee table special attention as the center or the living room.

Few traces or the wood in the form or light scratches, nicks, especially on the lower legs and minor spalling. The more severe, hand-cut glass plate there is a small chipping on the underside or the edge and a few minor scratches. The frame was re-glued and painted. However, all defects are very small and do not affect the high-quality character or this cabinet negative.

This Scandinavian coffee table designed by Illum what Wikkelsø for CF Christensen Silkeborg in Denmark in the 1960s. Typical or the best Danish modern design, the excellent craftsmanship matches the refined details: such as beautifully carved x-shaped legs and the cut outs for the hand-cut glass top to rest on. The organically shaped frame is carved out or bright mahogany wood.

The wooden parts show only some minor traces or wear and tear, mostly on the lower legs. One chip on the glass tops bottom side and some minor scratches on the glass top. The wood has been glued and refinished. Overall appearance presents beautifully.

About the Creator

Illum Wikkelso

Though very little biographical information survives for Danish architect-designer Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999), the rich, organic quality of his designs found on the vintage market affirms his status as an active proponent of Scandinavian modernism in the postwar era.

Like most Danish designers at the time, Wikkelsø studied cabinetry, graduating from the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts. He later held positions with the cabinetmaker Jacob Kjaer and the architectural firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen. In 1944, Wikkelsø moved to Århus to work as an interior designer.

In 1954, he began designing his own furniture and, a few years later, established a workshop. Like many of his Danish contemporaries—Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, and Hans Wegner, for example—Wikkelsø’s designs emphasize formal simplicity and biomorphic silhouettes. Wikkelsø’s background in cabinetry engendered in him a profound understanding of materials and an excellent attention to detail. Working with teak and rosewood, he captured delicately sculptural forms. Wikkelsø believed that furniture should be built to last while cradling the body and pleasing the eye.

Well-known designs from Wikkelsø’s career include T118 Coffee Table (ca. 1950s), Gyngestol Rocking Chair (1958), and Model 91 Lounge Chair and Ottoman for Mikael Laursen (ca. 1959), among others. A number of Danish manufacturers produced Wikkelsø’s designs, such as C.F. Christensen, Holger Christiansen, Eilersen, Farstrup, Silkeborg, and Søren Willadsen.
