Collage Gerardo Rueda, Contemporary Art, 1985 - Spain
Exceptional collage on paper signed and dated by the renowned sculptor and painter Gerardo Rueda. She usually uses “humble materials” in her collages, in this case paper and the envelope placed vertically. The differences in material, texture or color of these materials deeply interested the author. In fact, his first collages, made in the early 1950s, are made with leather, paper and textiles. Despite its small dimensions, the strength of the work is undeniable, which emanates from the contrast between the chosen colors.
Gerardo Rueda Salaberri (Madrid, 1926-1996)
Gerardo Rueda was a sculptor and painter, one of the essential painters in the history of Spanish abstraction and founder, together with his friend and painter Fernando Zóbel and Gustavo Torner, of the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca.
His path towards abstraction began during the 1940s, through geometric shapes. The works still retained clear references to his first landscapes, but they already showed the harbinger of his definitive incursion into pure abstract forms, starting in the seventies. The appearance of monochromes constituted a decisive turn in his career. He was especially attracted to Italian spatialism, which he discovered during his trip to Italy in 1960, as the Spanish representative at the XXX Venice Biennale.
He then began to develop a painting that was more related to the Italian, French, German and American monochrome painters than to his compatriots dedicated to informalism. Some of its most obvious influences are the French group Support-surface or the work of Italians such as Lucio Fontana.
In 1997, the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum presented an exhibition with his collages. More than 180 works reviewed the artist's extensive career, from his figurative beginnings to his latest creations.
