Vintage Design

Wonderful Satsuma porcelain set consisting of a teapot, milk and sugar bowl, and four cup and saucer stands, all in a deep lapis lazuli blue. Satsuma porcelain was made during the Meiji Period between 1868 and 1912 in Japan.

It is an exquisite set made with a refined technique, as the paste used is almost eggshell thick, so much so that it tends to be translucent. The originally popular patterns of satsuma porcelain include floral and geometric designs. However, from the 19th century onward, the subject matter expanded to include landscapes, genre and mythological scenes, and enamel and gold decorations, as is the case here.

The motif of the ornament is the dragon, which is repeated in each piece, a mythological being deeply rooted in oriental culture, symbol of power, nobility and honor. The most wonderful thing about this set is that the handles are the body of the dragon, and the nozzle is the head of the dragon, where the liquid comes out. In addition, the intense blue color has only been achieved by using lapis lazuli pigment, one of the most difficult to obtain.

The ornament is completed with polychrome and hand enameling, achieving a relief through it. The vivid and elegant colors are enhanced with gilding. Each piece has a stamp on the base.

State of conservation: They are in very good condition, they have no nibbles or hairline cracks.
