Bernardino Campi (Reggio Emilia 1520 - Cremona 1591) circle of Lamentation of the Deposed Christ and Saint Francis Oil on canvas 154 x 122 cm The work highlights how Michelangelo's Pietà played an epochal inspiring role for Italian art in the sixteenth century. The canvas, characterized by profound religiosity and severe composure, expresses the dictates of the Church of Rome after the Council of Trent. It has stringent analogies with similar works painted by Bernardino Campi, to whose circle the work can be traced back. Among others, his students were Andrea Mainardi, Giovanni Battista Trotti known as Malosso and Sofonisba Anguissola.
