About This Piece

Raphael's Madonna della Sedia dates to 1513/14 and is kept in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Originally it was part of the Uffizi collection, and has then been brough to Paris during the storms of the Napoleonic wars. The tondo is rumoured to be painted on a bottom of a barrel. The title Madonna delle Sedia refers to the seated position of Virgin Mary. In this painting she is depicted as a contemporary Italian woman, almost genre-like with a scarf and green embroidered shawl hanging over her shoulders, and the canonic blue dress. The Virgin is embracing intimately the Christ child in yellow garnament. Mother and son are looking directly to us, whilest accompagnied and adored by John the Baptist. The tondo was a popular etude piece and has several high-quality copies, among them this 19th century paining.
