About This Piece

Neoclassical sculpture in bronze with brown patina, entitled "L'Amour", also known as "L'Amour prenant un papillon", signed Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810) on the terrace.
Chaudet was a French sculptor and painter best known for winning the first Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1784. He was a member of the Académie de France in Rome, then of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, and finally a professor at the Beaux Arts in Paris.
This work depicts Love in the guise of an airy, delicately posed adolescent, innocently playing with a butterfly that has come to feed on the juice of a rose.
The original marble sculpture, completed posthumously in 1817, is now on display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
Chaudet's refined, bucolic work expresses sensitivity, restraint and grace.
